Wombat Bend Park – Lower Templestowe
On the last sunny weekend in Melbourne I gathered the kids up and took them to tWombat Bend Park which is located at Finns Reserve in Duncan Street, Lower Templestowe (Mel Ref: 33 B4).
The park opened in February 2008 and cost the Manningham City Council and Victorian State Government in excess of $800,000 to create.
Was this money well spent? And would it keep my three children aged 7, 5 and 3 interested for more than 2 minutes?
Upon our arrival I realised that I wasn’t the only parent with the idea of taking the kids to this play ground.
The park was a hive of activity with birthday parties occurring under the freestanding picnic shelter, birthday parties occurring at the sand pit area and even more birthday parties at the flying fox.
Entering the park through the main gate the kids were off to the maze with its interactive sound features, distorting mirrors and obstacles. Once through the maze they spotted the flying fox located on the other side of the play ground. Crossing the timber bridge and playing fleeting attention to the musical chimes within the bridge their focus was on the flying fox.
Joining a line of similarly excited children my kids eagerly waited their turn as other fathers took it in turns to propel screaming children down the flying fox. The excitement of this new adventure was entrancing for all three children, even the youngest. The exhilaration of the flying fox meant that if I had let them they would have stayed on it all day. Finally they were convinced to try the other pieces of equipment.
Located nearby the flying fox was a carousel with three swing seats. Once all three were buckled in it was up to me to spin them around and around and around. The faster they went the greater their enjoyment.
After tiring with the carousel they explored the climbing frames, see saws and slides and then explored the sensory gardens and sand pits with water features before returning to the flying fox and carousel.
After 2 hours and many flying fox rides we left the park and only after me promising to take them back there soon.
Overall Wombat Bend Park is a high class facility, best suited for the under 10 age group, and which offers a variety of activities suitable for all children.
