The Taj Mahal, Agra, India - A Review

What is the greatest sign of love and devotion of a husband to his wife? The answer is unquestionably the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.

Built in the 17thcentury by a grieving Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his “favourite” wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal is considered to be the finest example of Mughal architecture and is one of the new seven wonders of the world.

A recent trip to India and I too found myself standing and gazing in awe at this magnificent monument to love. From every angle you appreciate the changes in appearance and the colour that exudes from the pale stone and remaining gem stones.

On any day the Taj Mahal is visited by thousands of like minded individuals and as such the queues can be extensive but by adopting the “Indian” way of commerce you can circumvent the lines and wander inside the Taj. However, the main beauty of the Taj Mahal is evidently not on the inside but the outside and is a photographer’s nirvana.

In this day and age security is paramount so don’t be surprised that you will need to be the subject of a pat down search and bag check.

Taj_Mahal_No_4As with all tourist sites in India when entering the Taj Mahal you need to run the gauntlet of hawkers seeking to sell you everything from chess sets to models of the Taj. Attempting to ignore them may work some of the time but these people are extremely persistent and will follow you from your car to the gate and back again in the vain attempt of securing a sale.

The best time to visit is towards the end of the day when the changing position of the sun has the greatest influence on the colours of the Taj Mahal.

Engaging the services of a guide, from a company such as Sita, enhances any visit by highlighting the best spots for that ultimate photo while also providing the full intriguing history of this monument to love.

Does the Taj Mahal live up to all the hype...........................absolutely
