Volumes Cafe and Restaurant - A Review

Being one of the original cafes in Eltham has its benefits. Volumes Cafe and Restaurant located at 70 Commercial Place in Eltham has been around in its current guise since the late 1990s, and as such has developed a strong following and reputation in Eltham. It is a place you can go for coffee with work colleagues, a catch up with the mothers group or a casual family outing. While primarily a cafe, Volumes of Eltham also has a well stocked book shop and gift shop which you can peruse at leisure while waiting for your coffee or meal. Gracing the walls is a variety of works by local artists while the tables and chairs comprise an assortment of styles and ages. You know that you are a true Eltham local when you have your favorite chair and table at Volumes. The menu is centred around casual dining, and a family favourite is the mixed dip platter ($13.95) and the large bowl of wedges with sour cream and sweet chili sauce ($7.95) both of which are enough to satisfy a ravenous family of five for afternoon tea. The "buffet" display cabinet offers an amazing variety of lunch favorites lasagna, focaccias, mediterranean vegetable stack and pies all at a reasonable price.  The quality of the food cannot be questioned and the self serve water is also an added bonus. The baby chino is also impressive and will certainly be a hit with the younger ones amongst us. Being licensed allows Volumes the ability to offer a variety of local wines while the broader menu ranges from heart warming foods such as risotto and burgers through to health conscious options such as salads. The attitude of staff is friendly and accommodating which is a change from the much earlier times when you felt that your were imposing on them. Overall the atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable albeit at times loud due to the concrete floor and large open span nature of the typically Eltham designed building. Volumes is open seven days trading Monday to Saturday from 7am until 6pm and Sunday from 7 am until 5pm.
