Avoca – The Central Highlands
On a recent family road trip we stumbled across the town of Avoca. Avoca with a population of some 1,000 is found at the eastern base of the Pyrenees Ranges in the Victorian Central Highlands, 71 kilometres to the north west of Ballarat.
Avoca is famous for its period buildings which reflects the immense wealth which was present in the region in the late 1800s as a result of the gold rush. Many of the buildings are situated on either side of the main road and a leisurely walk in either direction enables the visitor to soak in this period architecture.
The visitor information centre located in the main street and adjoining the local library is a wealth of information for the traveller with maps and guides available. With the assistance of a knowledgeable staff member we were able to identify a number of family friendly wineries within easy driving distance of the town centre as well as a number of local sights suitable for lunch and exploration.
Places of interest include McMurray Galleries and the Avoca Hotel which provides the weary traveller with a place to quench a well earned thirst.
The war memorial located in the centre of the main street is evidence of the immense sacrifice that towns such Avoca made in both world wars.
In adjoining streets there are a number of photo opportunities such as an old storage shed and the main street newsagent.
After a good couple of hours searching the streets of Avoca and a quick snack at the local, award winning bakery we were back on the road ready to explore what this region had to offer.
Avoca and the Central Highlands has a lot to offer and is a must for any Victorian.
