The St Andrews Market wasn’t on but A Boy Named Sue was Open
A Boy Named Sue St Andrews – Taking charge of the family outing on a sunny Sunday I chose with confidence the St Andrews Market. A nice drive, some 45 minutes from Melbourne through wineries, olive plantations and native bushland we arrived at St Andrews with its pub, bakery, restaurant/cafe and of course its famous market. However there was one problem the market site was reminiscent of those westerns where you see the tumble weeds blowing down the deserted town. Yes I, Mr Merely Male, had got the right time for the market but the wrong day. The St Andrews Market is open on Saturdays and not Sundays.
Quickly trying to save the situation I span around, looking in every direction and fixed my gaze on a cafe/restaurant named A Boy Named Sue. Reminiscent of my childhood spent listening to Johnny Cash on the tape deck in the Toyota Corona, I considered this a positive omen and decided this was the place for lunch.
Choosing a table outside, along with a number of more active cyclists, we were promptly attended to by friendly and engaging staff. A review of the menu which included brunch and pizza options we chose 4 pizzas, namely:
- The Italiano
- The Warwick Capricciosa
- The Australiano
- Mary Had A Little Lamb
All pizzas are wood fired and created from a “unique sourdough culture, proved for a minimum of 72 hours” and cooked in a wood fired oven at 400+ degrees.
The pizzas are of a high standard and appear to use quality ingredients and as a guide 1 pizza would be enough for 2 people especially at lunch.
A Boy Named Sue is an ideal rest stop for those on either a motorbike or bicycle ride to Kinglake and the Yarra Valley and I can strongly recommend the pizzas.
So what had the potential to reflect badly on me as Mr Mere Male turned out to be a success thanks to a little cafe called A Boy Named Sue.
The cafe/restaurant is located at 87 Burns Street in St Andrews and is open Wednesday to Sunday (time vary but for Sunday it is 9am to 9.30pm).
